Camping at Blue Mound State Park
Blue Mound State Park in Wisconsin is a bit further from Chicago than many of the campgrounds we cover. At 165 miles (more than three hours) away, it’s a destination that requires a significant amount of travel. But if you’re looking for winter camping near Chicago, this may be the place for you.
If you decide to make the drive to the site 25 miles west of Madison, what will you find? How about 77 wooded campsites and 12 more sites you can hike or bike to. The campground has toilets and water fountains. Sixteen of the sites have electric.
In addition to camping sites, the park has lots of trails for hiking, biking and skiiing, as well as a nature center. The 40-mile Military Ridge State Trail passes through here. And get this – the park has a heated swimming pool, the only one in the Wisconsin park system. It’s 75 feet long and 11 feet deep with a diving area, and visitors can swim there for an additional $2 fee per day.
Blue Mound State Park houses the highest point in southern Wisconsin at 1,716 feet. Above, you can see a winter image of the East Observation Tower. If you must camp outside in the winter months, the park is a good option.
The park is open year-round from 6 am to 11 pm. Campground reservations can be made in advance with Reserve America. As with all Wisconsin state parks, you’ll need a vehicle admission sticker, which can range in price depending on whether you’re a Wisconsin resident and for long you want the pass. Find out more here.
The park is only about 30 minutes away from one of Wisconsin’s coolest attractions, the enigmatic House on the Rock.
